Where to eat

The pretty town of Saumur has many attractions. The owners can make reservations for you in the restaurants in the area and arrange for visits to local vineyards for wine tasting.


  • Troglodytic Restaurant l'Hélianthe, situated in Turquant, between 2 hillsides with cellars and other troglodytic sites. The cuisine of the Chef, Arnaud Montais, is mainly based on old vegetables, fish from the Loire and marinated meat.

  • Le "Pot de Lapin" restaurant and wine-cellar is located in Saumur. In a friendly atmosphere, you will eat 'à la carte' made of fresh products, cuisine from the market and also tapas.

  • Le Gambetta is a fine-dining place and a one star Michelin restaurant located in Saumur. The Chef, Mickaël Pihours, will propose you a travel with his creative cuisine which plays on textures, combinations of flavors, spices not to mention the pleasure of the eyes.

  • Le "30 février" is the place to eat pizzas, salads and vegetarian dish in Saumur.

  • L'Amuse bouche  is a restaurant located between Montsoreau and Saumur. The Chef, Christophe Bodin, will propose you regional specialities revisited such as pikeperch, eel, small fried fish (from june to september), duck confit... ; seasonal produces.


What to visit

  • You'll want to visit the Saumur Castle, the Riding School (Ecole nationale d'equitation) and the famous "Cadre Noir" known worldwide for its annual shows during the month of July.

  • The elegant church built in the 12th and 13th centuries in Candes-St-Martin is exquisite.

  • The 12th-century Royal Abbey of Fontevraud is where Henry II, Eleanor of Acquitaine and their son, Richard the Lionhearted, are buried.

Within easy driving distance there are many châteaux from the medieval period through the 19th century :



Horseriding, canoeing and boat trips on the Loire, tennis, biking and more are all available close by. Bike and canoe rentals are easy to arrange.

  • Don't miss the Vegetable Market Sunday mornings in Montsoreau for a taste of an authenic French market. Relax on the terrasse of the local cafes bordering the Loire River while reading La Dame de Montsoreau - Alexander Dumas' celebrated heroine.

  • For antiquity lovers, visit the Montsoreau Flea Market ("Les Puces"), every 2nd sunday of each month on the banks of the Loire.
